3M DuraPrep Surgical Prepping Solution gives you effective antimicrobial kill in a single, painted coat, along with significantly greater drape adhesion when compared to ChloraPrep Antiseptic1. 3M DuraPrep Surgical Prepping Solution, is not povidone iodine and is not represented in any clinical study that references PVP-I. 3M DuraPrep Surgical Prepping Solution keeps resident bacterial counts low for at least 48 hours after blood and saline challenge, and at least 12 hours against transient bacteria1,2. Don''t let the applicators fool your surgical team. Only one surgical patient prep is NDA approved by the FDA to be applied in a single, painted, coat with no scrubbing: 3M DuraPrep Surgical Prepping Solution. {1}Following ASTM E1173 {2} Data on file (05-010565), 3M Health Care.

  • Is 40% less expensive than ChloraPrep Patient Preoperative Skin Preparation per 26 mL applicator{1}.
  • Designed to be applied in a single, painted coat- 2 log reduction - abdomen at 10 minutes- 3 log reduction - groin at 10 minutes- Both sites maintain counts below baseline out to 6 hours.
  • Covers more than twice the area than ChloraPrepAccording to labeling, a 26 mL applicator of ChloraPrep will cover an area 13.2 inches by 13.2 inches, or 174 square inches. In comparison, a 26 mL applicator of 3M DuraPrep Surgical Prepping Solution will cover 15 inches by 30 inches or 450 square inches.
  • Has substantial clinical documentation including data in simulated surgical conditions- 5 human safety studies- 9 in vitro studies- 8 in vitro studies- 8 clinical in-use studies{1}ChloraPrep solution brochure: "Surgical site Infections: the economic impact"ChloraPrep is a registered trademark of Carefusion Corporation.

Features

It is a common misconception that all surgical patient preps have approximately the same properties. Not so. Iodine povacrylex, the active ingredient in 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution(Iodine Povacrylex [0.7% available iodine] and Isopropyl Alcohol, 74% w/w) Patient Preoperative Skin Preparation, has special attributes not found in other preps. Nothing compares to thePower of Povacrylex.

Persistence: First and foremost, a surgical patient prep should be effective in killing microbes. Clinical results beat claims any day. DuraPrep solution has substantial clinical documentation to support its efficacy story. Studies show that DuraPrep solution keeps resident bacteria counts low for at least 48 hours* after blood and saline challenge, and at least 12 hours against transient bacteria.

One-step paint application: DuraPrep solution provides antimicrobial kill in a single, painted coat. Nothing is faster. Nothing is easier. Which may explain why its been used in more than 25 million surgical procedures. DuraPrep solution keeps it simple. There is one set of application instructions wherever you work.

Water insoluble film immobilizes bacteria: Skin antiseptics disinfect, but do not sterilize skin. Remaining flora can migrate to the wound through irrigation, instruments, or surgeons gloves. DuraPrep solution dries to a water-insoluble film that immobilizes bacteria not killed, reducing the risk of microbial migration to the surgical incision/wound even when an incise drape isnt used.

Enhanced drape adhesion: Incise drapes are used to create a sterile surface in procedures where the consequence of infection can have serious morbidity or mortality. But when a drape lifts at the wound edge, the exposed skin allows for the potential of bacteria being transferred into the wound. Therefore, it is important to consider the effect of different preps on drape adhesion. In clinical studies, the polymer-based film of povacrylex in DuraPrep solution showed significantly greater drape adhesion than ChloraPrep Patient Preoperative Skin Preparation 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate (CHG) & 70% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA), as well as other water soluble preps.

Resistant to blood/saline wash-off: The unique formulation of povacrylex holds its ground even when challenged by blood/ saline. The resistance to removal throughout the procedure optimizes the persistence and bactericidal power of iodine. The percentage of patients with skin prep visible on the leg site at the end of surgery was significantly higher.

Suggested Applications

  • The 8630 large-size applicator is appropriate for: Large prep areas below the neck.
  • Thoracic and CV.
  • Spine.
  • Total hip and knee.
  • C-section and major abdominal surgeries.
  • Do not use the 26 mL applicator for head and neck surgeries. The volume of liquid is difficult to control in this application. Instead, use the 6 mL applicator.

FAQs

1. The 3M DuraPrep Surgical Solution (Iodine Povacrylex [0.7% available iodine] and Isopropyl Alcohol, 74% w/w) Patient Preoperative Skin Preparation warning states the dry time as a minimum of 3 minutes on hairless skin. What is considered hairless skin?

Hairless skin is considered an area where hair is removed prior to the application of DuraPrep solution or where there is insufficient hair to require its removal.

2. What is iodine povacrylex?

Iodine povacrylex is a proprietary iodine acrylate copolymer developed by 3M scientists, an example of 3M innovation. This copolymer provides several benefits: superior resistance to removal by blood and irrigating solutions compared to non-copolymer formulations (e.g. Betadine scrub and/or paint), continued antimicrobial activity after blood and saline exposure, and excellent drape adhesion compared to non-copolymer formulations of either povidone iodine (PVP-I) or chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG).

3. Can we use DuraPrep solution on open wounds? Lacerations? Gun shot wounds?

No. DuraPrep solution is indicated for use on intact skin only. It is not appropriate for useon any open wounds, e.g. lacerations, decubitus ulcers, gun shot wounds.
